There are wedding venues that charge five figures for a ballroom because it has a view of one maple tree. Meanwhile, for a few weeks each fall, all of New Hampshire turns crimson and gold at once, and the two of you can stand in the middle of it, married. This is the single most requested season we plan, and the one that books out first. Fair warning: if you are dreaming of October, reach out early.

When peak color actually happens

Every year is a little different, weather decides, but the rhythm is reliable. Color typically starts in the far north and high elevations in mid to late September, sweeps through the White Mountains around the turn of the month, and works south through early and mid October, finishing near the seacoast and the Massachusetts border in the back half of October.

Two practical takeaways from that. First, "peak" is a moving window, not a date, and chasing a specific weekend months ahead is a gamble. Second, that is fine, because the window is wide if you are flexible on location. Book a date, and we place the ceremony where the color is, north or south, ridge or valley. That flexibility is exactly what a planned elopement is for.

Where fall hits hardest

• Mountain overlooks. Ledges like Artist Bluff and Cathedral Ledge put an entire flaming valley behind your vows. This is the postcard, and everyone knows it, so we go at sunrise or on weekdays.
• Waterfalls framed in color. Jackson Falls in October is unreasonable, clear water over granite with maples burning on both banks.
• Back roads and farms. Stone walls, sugar maples, a field of gold light. Quieter than any overlook, and often better photographs.
• Lakes at dawn. Fall mornings bring mist off the water with color doubled in the reflection. Nobody regrets a sunrise lake elopement in October.

What to expect from the weather

Fall in New Hampshire is moody, and that is part of the deal. Mornings can start near freezing on the ledges and warm into a perfect afternoon. Rain rolls through, wind happens, and overcast skies show foliage color better than harsh sun, truly. Every location we book comes with a rain plan, and some of the best photographs we have ever made happened under an umbrella. Dress in layers, bring the boots, and let the weather be a character in the story.

What to wear

Deep, rich tones photograph beautifully against foliage, and so does classic white and black. Long sleeves earn their keep by October. A wool coat or a knit shawl reads gorgeous on camera, and your favorite boots under the gown is practically a New Hampshire tradition. We send every couple a short styling note once the location is set.

The honest logistics

• Book early. Foliage weekends are the first dates on our calendar to go each year, and lodging in the mountains sells out well ahead.
• Weekdays win. Leaf season traffic on a Saturday on the Kancamagus is real. A Tuesday elopement gets you empty overlooks and half price lodging.
