Artist Bluff is the photograph people picture when they imagine eloping in the White Mountains: a granite outcrop above Echo Lake, with Franconia Notch and Cannon Mountain rolling away below. It earns its fame twice over. The view is enormous, and the walk to reach it is short enough for grandparents, dress shoes, and champagne in a backpack.

Why couples choose it

Very few places give you an alpine feeling for this little effort. From the parking area off Route 18, the walk up is steep but brief, most couples are standing on the ledge within about fifteen minutes. That makes Artist Bluff one of the rare mountain ceremonies that can include a small circle of family, and one of the few where sunrise is genuinely achievable without a headlamp adventure.

Artist Bluff is popular because it is perfect, and it is crowded because it is popular. On a fair weather Saturday afternoon, the ledge hosts a steady parade of hikers, and your ceremony becomes a public event. The fix is timing: sunrise, when we usually have the bluff entirely to ourselves, or a weekday evening in the shoulder of the season. Practical details

• The walk: short and steep, on rock and roots. Fifteen minutes at a relaxed pace. Boots up, ceremony shoes in the bag, this is the home turf of the bride in hiking boots.
• Light: sunrise is the magic here, soft light on the notch and no audience. Late afternoon glows too, with more foot traffic.
• Permissions: the bluff sits within a state park, and parks ask event holders to arrange permission for ceremonies ahead of time. Rules vary by season and group size, and confirming them is part of every booking we take here.
• Rain plan: always. Weather in the notch changes by the hour, and we hold a sheltered alternate for every date.
